LIFI
What is LIFI:
WiFi runs our life. In fact, according to a survey carried out by Direct Line by Opinium Research online, it is the number one thing that their respondents couldn’t live without. But no matter where you are in the world, you’ve probably experienced internet connectivity problems at one point or anotherthen what is LIFI why they introduced this and How it works? LIFI stands for Light Fidelity it is a concept of achieving communication through light instead of spectrum.
History of LIFI: Professor Harald Haas ,chair at the mobile communications at the University of Edinburgh is considered to be the founder of LIFI technology. In 2011 gloable TED talk he promoted this technology.Light fidelity can be applied in traffic controllling systems using car headlights and it can provide high internet access where the RF's cannot reach.
How LIFI works?
  \
LIFI is based on a concept called VLC (visible light communication).this concept is when we give a LED a constant input then it gives us a constant output, but when we fluctuate the input the output will also be fluctuated. This helps in communication just as Morse code.
Just as a TV remote contains an IR bulb which blinks on our instructions and sends data to the receiver in the TV.But in this case there would be many bulbs and they send the data in binary digits
The above picture shows the basic concept of VLC (visible light communication) where the content will be received from server and the internet and Lamp fluctuates the input which results in the variations in the output and it is detected and amplified this data is received by our computer
LIFI supports roaming option which means whenever we move from one LED tom another the connection will automatically re-established.
LIFI also allows multiple users which means more than one user can connect for a single source of light stream.
Benefits of LIFI: As compared to WIFI, the speed of LIFI is more upto 100Gbps in testing environment
When comes to the spectrum compared to radio waves the wavelength of visible light is 10000 times more which means we can operate many connections parallelly without any interference between them
In case of security WIFI waves can pass through walls that means the ones who are living outside the room can also make use of WIFI but in case of LIFI only the person who is in the room only can have access to that network. When it comes to data density by using WIFI the data spreads around the area which we are not using while in case of LIFI as it is a light we can specify a perfect point to transmit the data. The most important threat with Wireless networks is radiation which in case of WIFI as they are radio waves they can cause radiation but LIFI is only a light so NO RADIATION
Advantages of LIFI
- Smart Street lamps which helps in providing the hotspot tot he users and helps in monitoring the lights and as well as we get the lighting.
- Same as WIFI the different devices will connect with same network but the range will be low but the data transmission rates will be high and secured.
- In case of hazardous environments like inside the tunnels which using radio waves is harmful we can make use of LIFI not only that but also in underwater where any radio waves won't work inside the water we can make use of LIFI and In planes we can provide a limited high speed internet access to the each and every passenger.
- In hospitals we use various devices which works on radio waves in that we can make use of LIFI where we don't find any interference.
Comparison between LIFI and WIFI: How close are we to use LIFI?
It's been predicted that the LIFI would be available to the general public in the early 2020 A grocery store in France is currently using LIFI to track their customers throughout the store and is then able to provide coupons large companies like Apple are suggesting that there future devices would be compatable to LIFI.
